Young Grace Kelly Goes to the Beach

Young Grace Kelly was already an icon. But what made her so classy, even at the beach? The temperature hit mid-70s today and it’s driving me (once again) back to the beach! This time, one of my all-time favorite star photo shoots: Grace Kelly. Sepia. Beach. I’m in love.

Grace Kelly is one of the few stars who (in my opinion) sparkles way more in photos than in films. Don’t get me wrong–she’s an amazing actress–and it may just be due to typecasting, but movies always show her famous reserve, that ice-queen glamour.

Maybe it’s because she started out as a model, or maybe it’s just because she was able to let go more in front of still cameras, but in photos like these, you can really see young Grace Kelly melt away that ice-queen exterior to the giggly girl underneath.

And honestly? At the end of the day, if fashion isn’t fun…why bother?

The Style

Low-Key Elegance

Why It’s So Grace

Let’s take a closer look:

The second and third pictures are almost caricatures of some of her other, more formal portraits, that’s how often she used these poses (and take a look at the third one–does she know her “good” side or what?) (Note: If you are Grace Kelly, all sides are your good side).

And actually, I’m pretty convinced that she’s making fun of her own image here (at least in the second and third pics). It’s just my own conjecture/imagination, but I see this photo shoot going as follows:

  1. “I’m at the beach! What do you mean, elegant? Nobody’s elegant at the beach. Silly.”
  2. “Oh, you mean like this? Oh, ‘I’m Grace Kelly, and this is my serious face.'”
  3. “Why stop there? Here’s a full-on glamour pose, just like the kind I would use if I were wearing Dior, except I’m not. I’m in a pink bikini, and I’m at the beach, and I’m Grace Kelly, so there.”

Even if she’s not really joking in those last two pics, I don’t actually care.

Why It’s Classic

Honestly, I could make something up here about her classic halter-neck, tie-back bikini, or her sleek hair, but to me, these photos are classics because they show us something totally timeless and universal: a young woman just having fun.

Make It Your Own

I mean, let’s face it: these are basically non-selfie selfies. (Although let’s just take a moment to observe that they would be waaaay lamer if they were actually selfies.) So, yeah, go ahead and record your own iconic moments. But to really make this look your own, don’t take yourself too seriously. Lighten up and let it go. Life’s too short.
